What to do if you failed Matric or unhappy with results? SA’s education system offers more than 4 options

The 2024 matric class finished the road to final exams, and some may need other avenues to earn that NSC exam.

There are some options for anyone who has not achieved a matric pass or for someone who wants better marks.

The matric certificate is important, but it is only a brief moment in one’s career, and failing it is not the end-all and be-all.

Matric exam remarking or rechecking cost

The Department of Basic Education recommends that candidates apply for remarking or rechecking, and it can be done immediately after receiving the results until 2 February 2024. A re-mark costs 120.00, and a re-check is R29.00 per script.

Remarking is a great option for someone who is one or two per cent away from passing a subject or if you are one per cent away from getting a higher level and aren’t satisfied, e.g. 59 % is a level 4 pass, and you need 60% to get a level 5 pass. Re-checking means they will recount the marks to ensure accuracy. Both are good ways to upgrade marks without rewriting.

The application forms for remarking are available at schools or examination centres. The results for remarking will be released on 15 March 2024 at the school/ exam centre.

Can I see my script?

For R234, matriculants can view their exam but only after remarking or re-checking. One can apply within seven days after the release of remark/recheck results. Seeing the exam and how it was marked can help to settle whether or not one should rewrite it.

Do you qualify for a matric supplementary exam?

Another option is for the matric candidate who fails to sit for play supplementary exam. It is available to a candidate who only needs two subjects or one to obtain their NSC certificate or someone who has a valid reason why they never wrote the exam.

To qualify for a supplementary exam if you never wrote, the candidate must provide proof they never sat for the exam(s) due to medical reasons a death in the family or any other special reason.

What if I don’t qualify for supplementary exams?

One option is to re-enroll in school for students under the age of 21. Over 21 will have to enrol at Adult Education Centres, the programs are free and available to those who have not completed formal schooling.

Is there College without matric?

19-year-olds can apply to complete adult Matric courses in college at an institution like Matric College. To write the adult matric exam, one must register in the education office or online at the DBE website (online)

Those who may not want to re-enrol for just a matric can complete their education through vocational training. There are vocational options through education and training colleges (Technical Vocational Education and Training aka TVET).
