“We won’t choose anything like apartheid”: SA roasts Cape Independence Party’s failure ahead of 2024 Elections

The Cape Independence Party will not be in the running for any parliamentary seats in South Africa’s 2024 elections.

South African political parties, including the Referendum Party, a single-issue party that is for an independent Western Cape, have big dreams but their goals have not resonated with most of the population.

Cape Independence Party loses the plot

The idea of a Western Cape independent from the rest of South Africa was a hot topic. Despite the buzz on social media, The Cape Independence Party and Referendum Party, both dedicated to making the province its own country, have not made it to the ballot for the upcoming May 2024 Elections.

How many signatures did Cape Independence Party get?

According to News24, the Cape Indepence party only garnered 200 signatures Parties need a minimum of between 11000 and 15 000 signatures to appear on the ballot as dictated by the Electoral Act.

The Referendum Party, aimed high, hoping for 100,000 votes but they are still in need of 13 201 signatures to make it to the 2024 ballot. The Cape Independence Party’s failure to make it to the ballot caused a buzz on social media. Netizens were in disbelief over the dismal amount of signatures the party managed to gather.

SA gloats about Cape Independence Party’s failure

Online users were amazed that the parties dedicated to an independent Western Cape did not have much support in reality. Some noted that the parties simply wanted to bring awareness to their missions, and not appearing on the ballots is not the end of their mission.

South Africans took to X to share their savage reactions about the Cape Independent Party not making it to the ballot. Check out the comments below:

@Zoe_SZi tweeted:

“Cape Independence is learning the hard way that South Africans won’t choose anything that so obviously resembles Apartheid. The DA must also take notes.”

@AyandaTankiso was amused:

“The Cape Independence party got 200 signatures! I can’t stop laughing. This is going to be a long morning for me. “

@Kim_Khandashisa was still worried:

“The fact that the Cape Independence was even a thing in a democratic country should worry us all. If they received those votes (thank God they didn’t), we would have land-invading thieves on our ballot. The fact that it is led by a majority of Europeans? That sounds crazy to me.”

@1112steven argued:

“The aim wasn’t to contest but to create awareness, somehow dey planted a seed of something that might happen in decades to come or in de next generation. They were supposed to be arrested.”
