The Defence council in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has revealed that he plans to have Kelly Khumalo on the stand.
Defence wants to subpeona Kelly Khumalo
Thulani Mngomezulu, The defence for one of the accused alleged that Longwe Thwala (who was present the night of the murder) is the actual perpetrator. He also stated that he plans to call Kelly Khumalo to the stand.
Kelly Khumalo’s name comes up again in Senzo Meyiwa Murder case
The State Advocate George Baloyi responded to the matter saying:
“She’s on the state’s witness list. We’ve indicated right from the beginning that we don’t intend to call”.
According to an eNCA report, Kelly Khumalo was one of the people present the night Senzo Meyiwa was killed in his parents vooslorus home. An officer reported in 2023 that call records indicated that the singer was in contact with one of the accused.

The late South African soccer player, former Bafana Bafana captian and Kelly Khumalo’s ex boyfriend was shot and killed in 2014. As it stands, there are five men on trial for his murder.
Kelly Khumalo accused of ordering the hit by the men on trial
On March 15 2024, eNCA reporter Manqoba Mchunu revealed that according to confessions from two of the accused, Kelly Khumalo is the one who orders the hit on Meyiwa.
Court probes unexecuted arrest warrant for Kelly Khumalo
When the applications for warrants of arrest were submitted for the men accused in the murder, one was also submitted for Kelly Khumalo. While the other warrants were authorised and executed, Khumalo’s was not.
Defence Advocate Zandile Mshololo questioned an investigator on the trial, about the warrant that was never executed. Witness Sergeant Batho Mogola responded saying she didn’t remember that. And later clarified that Brigadier Gininda briefed her and said it was a draft for an application.
When asked why the alleged mastermind is not before court, she stated “all I know is that the warrant was not executed”. She also said, responding to the defence council, that the question should be posed to Brig Gininda himself.
However there was no question about who the mastermind was according to sgt Mogola:
Mngomezulu: You’re mentioning that there is only one mastermind. Who is this mastermind…?
Mogola: My Lord I only know the name by Nonhlanhla Kelly Khumalo.
