South Africa’s bogus doctor, Matthew Lani Metro FM interview, angers listeners

Matthew Lani rose to notoriety after being exposed as a fake doctor on TikTok, and his life unravelled.

One of South Africa’s biggest radio stations, Metro FM, broadcasted an interview with the bogus internet personality

Who is Matthew Lani?

TikTok creator Matthew Lani made people believe he was a qualified medical doctor who studied at Wits University. He ran a popular TikTok page where he would give medical advice. He would also convince his audience that he was a child prodigy who went to university at 16.

Before his interview with Faith Mangope on Metro FM, Matthew Lani’s doctor credentials were proven as fake by Wits University and the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA)

What happened to Matthew Lani?

A bombshell went off when the official HPCSA released a statement that Dr Lani was not a registered name. Wits University also released a statement confirming they never had him as a student. In addition, the Gauteng Department of Education said Dr Lani does not have a matric certificate.

Mathew Lani was arrested based on charges (later dropped) by the Gauteng Department of Health when he impersonated a doctor by visiting a hospital in a face mask and walking around while filming. After his brush with the law, Metro FM sat down with Matthew Lani.

The local radio station got backlash after sitting down with Matthew Lani. Metro FM shared snippets of their interview where Matthew gave his side of things.

Matthew Lani Metro interview backfires

The audience did not take kindly to Metro FM’s efforts to hear Matthew Lani out. The radio station deleted a snippet of the interview posted on their official TikTok video. A TikTok user screen recorded the now-deleted post:

Netizens questioned whether the broadcaster could still be trusted. Some saw the interview as a lazy grab for easy numbers.

Metro FM listeners demand better content

Many felt that Metro FM could have used their platform to bring attention to more important matters. Matthew Lani’s appearance on Metro was interpreted as a type of validation for his bizarre behaviour.

@SandileKaMsibi said:

“If it isn’t South Africa: Giving the platform to all manner or rubbish except for those who deserve it.”

@Audriinah_ added:

“Giving an alleged fraudster a platform on one of the biggest radio platforms in the country is crazy.”
