President Cyril Ramaphosa settles on 2024 election day but are South Africans keen to vote after 30 years?

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced the dates for the national and provincial elections in South Africa in 2024.

According to a statement made by the presidency, the date was chosen in accordance with the Institution and after consultations with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

When is South Africa’s 2024 election date?

The SA government released a statement detailing that the elections will be held on 29 May 2024. The date for when voting registration will be closed is set to be proclaimed in the Government Gazette. The statement detailed that the date is in accordance with section 49(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, read with section 17 of the Electoral Act of 1998. The statement read:

“The President has also, in line with section 17(2) of the Electoral Act 73 of 1998, consulted with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on the election date. Furthermore, the President convened a meeting with all 9 Provincial Premiers and the IEC to discuss the state of readiness for the General elections.”

How many registered to vote for 30th democratic elections?

The 2024 elections coincide with the 30th-year celebration of democratic elections in South Africa since the first in 1994. President Ramaphosa urges all eligible voters to register and show up at the polls during this historic moment

According to the Electoral Commission, as it stands, there are over 27 million people registered to vote, compared to over 26 million who were registered to vote in 2019. Gauteng and Kwa Zulu Natal are leading the country with 23.52% and 20.75% registration, respectively. Women voters account for 55.22% of all registered voters, with men at 48.78%.
