Miss Universe 2023 Bryoni Govender: Does Miss SA runner up stand a chance

Miss Universe 2023 will be underway on 18 November in Elsalvador and many around the world are eager to see which country will take the title

South Africa will be represented by Bryoni Governder who already made her mark by placing 19th in Miss Universe’ Voice for Change competition

Miss Universe 2023 will be broadcasted live from José Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador. Bryoni Govender hopes to bring South Africa the crown after Zozibini Tunzi’s reign in 2019.

Does Bryoni Govender stand a chance at Miss Universe 2023?

Miss Universe is a prestigious global beauty competition. Bryoni Govender hopes to follow in the footsteps of other pageant Queens from USA, Mexico, South Africa and more who have won Miss Universe. A look at Miss Unnverse’s past four winners can give a hint about what judges are looking for.

Miss Universe 2022, USA, R’Bonney Gabriel

The last crowned Miss Universe is R’Bonney. The American from Texas has a fashion degree and was a sewing instructor for an non-profit according to Business Insider.

R’Bonney’s social justice concern concluded Texa’s abortion law. She also touched on trans people’s issues in her state.

2. Miss Universe 2021, India, Harnaaz Sandhu

Haraaz Sandhu boasts impressive degrees, a Bachelors in IT and Masters degree in Public administration. India Today reported that the Indian beauty’s passion project is about raising Cancer awareness.

3. Miss Universe 2020, Mexico, Andrea Meza

When Andrea Meza won Miss Universe, she focused on tackling Gender Based Violence (GBV). ABC News details that Meza also advocated for women to have more presence in STEM.

Andrea was alrady repping Mexico well before winning Miss Universe. She was the official Tourism Brand Abassador for her home town Chihuahua City.

4. Miss Universe 2019, South Africa, Zozibini Tunzi


Mzansi aka South Africa, rejoiced when Zozibini Tunzi took the crown. According toMiss SA, Zozi is professionally trained in PR. She holds a Cape Pennisula University of Technology (CPUT) B-Tech in PR and a PR managemnt diploma.

Zozi’s reign was one that broke barriers as she did it in her natural short hair. She said:

“Looking at past Miss South Africa contestants, we see that brilliant minds have grace the stage. Beauty pageants in 2019 are more than just outer beauty, they are about what an individual can offer to the world.

Bryoni Govender excited for Miss Universe 2023

Much like past Miss Universe winner, Bryoni is a beauty with brains. The pageant queen boasts an LLB degree from Univeristy of Johannesburg. The South African Indian will be the first of her heritage to represent the nation glbally according to Miss SA.

The Miss SA runner up all about women equality and empowerment. Bryoni told Miss SA:

“I am fully committed to my support of women equality in South Africa. My advocacy is to address and remove the gaps in the progress of women empowerment by introducing mentorship programmes focusing on business and leadership courses, entrepreneurial and job training programmes and skills development programmes on secondary to post-tertiary levels of education for girls and women.”

Looking at the past Miss Universes’ passions and achievements, Bryoni Govender may stand a chance. The pageant will be on 17 November 2023 and is due to be livestream on the Miss Universe Youtube channel.
