“He said they’re criminals”: Thabo Mbeki’s passion for ANC on Soweto campaign questioned over old video

Thabo Mbeki has been encouraging South Africans to vote for the ANC in the May 2024 elections. The former South African president was in Soweto singing ANC’s praises.

Thabo Mbeki confident in ANC

On 25 April 2024 Thabo Mbeki rubbed shoulders with Soweto locals. He addressed the people and urged them to vote for the ANC and assured them that they will get rid of the rotten apples in the party. Watch a snippet of what he had to say to Soweto resident below posted by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi:

ANC reveals political campaign plan

MK Party stormed onto the political scene with Jacob Zuma’s support as he used his name to rally Mzansi behind the new party. The ANC may be following the same strategy as the ANC head of elections Mdumiseni Ntuli said that the party would be making its political campaign stronger with the support of other powerful names in the ANC. He explained why Thabo Mbeki’s support was crucial:

“It is a very important intervention because he is not only a senior in the party, he is a highly respected leader of the people across all sectors of society. So, to have him going out and engaging with the population is going to help the ANC.”

The ANC plans to involve National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete, former president Kgalema Motlanthe and former deputy president David Mabuza to campaign for the party.

SA doubts Thabo Mbeki

Many people on social media were reminded of how former president Mbeki spoke out against the ANC. He spoke at an event for the Thabo Mbeki African school of Public and International Affairs where he said the ANC was full of criminals. Netizens soon started comparing the videos that resurfaced to the most recent saying that Mbeki is a flip flopper. Watch the old video of Thabo Mbeki :

@Eben41919206 said:

“I had a lot of respect for Mbeki, but he has gone off the track, he now is vouching for people who he himself regarded as criminals. Show a little bit of integrity Mr Mbeki, step aside from ANC politics, it is tainting your once good reputation.”

@ThomasKagisho wondered:

“Didn’t he say he won’t campaign for this ANC?”

@Bro_mandla criticised:

“I love TM , I love the ANC but this current ANC is a big NO for me . Don’t vote for the ANC , abo Panyaza they are eating hence they bombard us with propaganda everyday . Wake up folks.”

@LordSpencer99 was not impressed:

“He’s not convincing even when he’s speaking mixing Zulu/Xhosa. Happy he was addressing ANC supporters, not Soweto residents.”

@African_Spring argued:

“UMbeki is now campaigning for imigodoyi. We thought he was against them.”
