DA affirms ICJ ruling on SA’s genocide case against Israel, pushes for 2 state solution with Palestine

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled on South Africa’s emergency measures request in its Gaza Strip genocide complaint against Israel in a landmark decision.

ICJ delivers verdict on Palestine genocide

ICJ emergency measures urge Israel to avert genocide in Gaza. Interestingly, the court did not mandate an immediate ceasefire. This decision comes amid Israel’s Gaza Strip military campaign, which has drawn worldwide alarm.

Palestine genocide in ICJ claims left unsettled

Importantly, the ICJ judges have not decided on the genocide charges. Due to the complexity of these claims, a ruling may take years.

DA Party pleased with ICJ ruling on Israel-Palestine war

In a statement issued on the party’s website South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA) praised the ICJ’s quick interim relief measures. The party urges minimising civilian losses and a quick genocide investigation.

Two-State Solution Commitment

Furthermore, the DA reiterates its two-state proposal based on UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338. Palestine and Israel should live peacefully, according to the party.

DA’s Call to Action: Regional Peace

The DA recommends five steps to promote regional peace after the ICJ’s ruling:

  1. Israeli Compliance: Urges Israel to follow ICJ’s genocide prevention ruling.
  2. Two-State Solution: Urges the Israeli Prime Minister to quickly recommit to a negotiated two-state solution.
  3. Hostage Release: Demands the restoration of all civilian captives on and after October 7.
  4. Hamas disarmament:
  5. Fresh Palestinian Elections: Advocates want Palestinian Authority-led elections.
