Member of Parliament (MP) Blade Nzimande addressed the allegations about receiving millions in bribes for tenders and protection from NSFAS service providers. SABC News broadcasted a briefing in Pretoria on 8 January 2023, where the Minister of Higher Education made it clear that he was innocent and was a part of a nefarious fight-back campaign. He emphasised the connection between the accusations and his efforts to combat corruption within NSFAS, ensuring clean governance.

The records released by OUTA have caused an uproar in the country. With students particularly taking issue with delayed or non-receipt of living allowances. Several political parties, including the Democratic Alliance, EFF ActionSA (all to lay criminal charges on Nzimande), have called for President Cyril Ramaphosa to fire Nzimande.

Despite mounting pressure, Nzimande firmly asserted that he would not resign, arguing that the allegations were baseless and an attempt to undermine his success in fighting corruption at NSFAS. The MP’s counter-argument has not soothed the anxieties of those accusing him. Additionally, he expressed concern about the safety of NSFAS Board Chairperson Ernest Khosa, who has reportedly received death threats amid the unfolding scandal.
According to News24, Blade Nzimande has vowed to sue OUTA for defamation.
