Queen B’s platinum hair colour confuses netizens

The movie premiere happened on 30 November 2023 in London and left a lot of people shocked as pictures appeared online. Some X users said the pop star looks like one of the Kardashians, and some accused her of wanting to look white.

Tina Knowles explains Beyoncé Knowles’ platinum hair

Beyoncé did directly address the allegations, but her mother was not one to let it slide. Ms Tina Knowles took to Instagram to express her displeasure on the accusations. She shared a reel on her Instagram highlighting her daughter’s appreciation of black women and black culture.

She explained why Beyoncé went platinum blonde:

She does a film, called the Renaissance, where the whole theme is silver with silver hair, a silver carpet, and suggested silver attire, and you bozos decide that she’s trying to be a white woman and is bleaching her skin?

Tina admitted Beyoncé would not appreciate her Instagram post but wanted everyone to have a piece of her mind. She said:

Tina Knowles fights Beyoncé haters

Here you sad little haters come out the woodwork. Jealousy and racism , sexism , double standards , you perpetuate those things. Instead of celebrating a sister or just ignoring if you don’t like her. , I am sick of you losers.

Bey’s mom also emphasised that she was let down by netizens who didn’t understand the creative looks:

What’s really most disappointing is that some Black people yes you bozos that’s on social media. Lying and faking and acting like you’re so ignorant that you don’t understand That black women have worn platinum hair since the Etta James days.

Why are netizens paranoid Beyoncé is trying to look white?

Tina Knowles mentioned specific disappointment in black people. Beyonce’s new era centres itself on black celebration and appreciation. It is extremely rare to find settings and or places that fully admire black women without turning to backhanded compliments or fetishization. And so, when these movements occur, such as B’s Renaissance, we hold on to them tightly as if they are an oasis in the desert.

We rely on our celebrities to feel safe, to feel beautiful, to feel wanted and to feel like there is a place in this world for us. Keeping up with the changing beauty standards is especially daunting for black women, and any move by a fave like Bey could be triggering. In a world where Eurocentric beauty standards are the rule, when there is a black face to look to, one can feel constantly on edge about that black icon.

Watching someone you have allowed to guide you shift and adapt to standards that you can’t ever aspire to reach feels like the rug has been pulled from under your feet. Because if even Beyoncé feels like she needs to look white then where does that leave us?
