“Pina ya Rihanna? I’m upset”: Metro FM Music Awards: Tyler ICU’s ‘Mnike’ gets no wins, Mzansi complains

The Metro FM Musi Awards were held on 27 April 2024 in Mpumalanga. Minke by Tyler ICU was nominated in five categories.

South Africans had high expectations as Mnike was popular on TikTok and on the American scene with praise from Rihanna and other American star. Kabza De Small’s Imithandazo was the main victor of the Metro FM Music Awards.

Mnike‘s Metro FM Music Award nominations tank

Tyler ICU’s Mnike was nominated at the Metro FM Music Awards (MMA) for Best Collaboration, Song of the Year, Best Viral Challenge and Best Amapiano and the song lost to Kabza De Small and Mthunzi’s Imitthandazo. Tyler ICU was nominated for Artist of They Year and Afropop singer Lwah Ndlunkulu won the category.

Tyler ICU fans bemoan MMA24 losses

The MMA results depend on who fans vote for. Tyler ICU supporters took to social media to bemoan the results of the MMA24 and many cried foul. Read the comments below:

@Zoe_Molebaloa said:

“Pina ya Rihanna?? I’m upset.”

@LeboneMphahlele commented:

“I feel like they should have had a global song category for Mnike and others like the global star category Tyla won.”

@Freeman40726272 argued:

“Problem is when a song is popular at night clubs, shebeens and parties. People there are all about drinking, dancing and fornication. They don’t have time or sober enough to actually vote for that song. Make a song resonate with housewives and it’ll win awards. They got time.”

@BonoloAnne felt Mnike‘s time was up:

“Thing is with Amapiano and TikTok, a song will blow up like crazy, then after a while, all the flames just die gradually. The hype is there for a while, then we forget about it.”

@only1munashe blamed the timing:

“People vote for what they like at the moment lets not forget that these awards are ALL based on votes Imithandazo is the biggest song right now obviously it would win.”

@Kuhle_Mkhize felt Tyler ICU fans could’ve done more:

“The fans should’ve voted bandla.”

Why is SA amazed Mnike did not any MMAs?

Mnike amassed 131 million posts on TikTok. The hit song was also Rihanna’s Song of the Year. The song was viral and helped amapiano get on the map, globally, through social media. Wiz Khalifa caught the Mnike bug and tried to sing the song which went viral in South Africa. The song’s popularity left many floored that it did not collect any MMA accolades.
