Pope Francis, declared that priests of the Catholic religion are no longer bound to approve marriage only for men and women

The Roman Catholic Church’s new approach to the LGBTQ+ community marked a significant move towards liberal politics

Pope Francis accepts gay marriage

A Vatican document approved by Pope Francis made significant tides for gay rights. He declared priests are now allowed to bless same-sex couples with holy matrimony.

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith released liberal declaration

Though it isn’t certain if the church will accept LGBTQ+ members fully. The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith released the declaration “Fiducia Supplicans” (“Supplicating Trust”), which has been approved by Pope Francis.

This document delineates conditions for Catholic priests to bless gay or unmarried couples in a pastoral context, emphasizing openness to transcendence and God’s mercy.

Maintaining traditional marriage doctrine allows for a more nuanced approach, permitting blessings for couples in irregular situations without officially validating their status. The declaration reflects a delicate balance, affirming the Church’s teachings while acknowledging the need for compassionate pastoral care and avoiding confusion with formal liturgical rites in the context of same-sex or unmarried unions.

Catholicism before embracing gay rights

The Catholic Church’s stance on LGBT rights has evolved amid historical shifts. The early priests not only emphasized heterosexual marriage but also interpreted certain Bible passages to condemn homosexuality. The pre-Vatican II era featured a slew of rigid views. Most of which considered homosexuality a sin. Though the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) initiated openness, it did not explicitly address homosexuality.

When the late 20th century came around, it saw global LGBT rights movements that influenced discussions. Pope John Paul II maintained tradition while emphasizing respect for all.

Pope Benedict XVI upheld traditional teachings, barring ordination for those with deep-seated homosexual tendencies. Pope Francis introduced compassion, emphasizing mercy. His 2016 document, “Amoris Laetitia,” urged inclusive pastoral care. Recently, he approved blessing same-sex couples under specific conditions, reflecting a nuanced change amid ongoing Church debates.
