It’s been over three days since an illegal mining operation collapsed in Chingola, trapping dozens and causing at least seven deaths.

Authorities, aided by Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and the Mines Safety Department, are making efforts to rescue the trapped individuals.

Zambia is one of the leading traders of copper, as it’s one of the main exports of the country. A lack of proper regulation enforcement has left this sector open to a myriad of illegal mining and trade. The incident that occurred on the 1st of December is just one in a long list of tragedies due to open strings left to be exploited.

The official number of miners trapped in the rubble is currently unknown, but Lusaka Times reports that the tally has been set to over 30 people. With that number being a representation of people who have been reported missing. The rescue team has spent the past three days drilling and pumping out water, but their efforts have been a dead end. The lack of resources has made rescue attempts fruitless.

Most Zambians have few to no resources, which leads to desperation that undoubtedly leads to fewer options for people in the region. Not only does this foster a negative relationship with the law, but also puts citizens in danger. Law enforcement agencies and mining safety units need to focus energies on addressing the ongoing issue.

Illegal mining not only steals resources but also puts unlicensed individuals, some of them minors, into life-risking situations. Offering better opportunities and educating people on the dangers could positively impact the levels of illegal mining.

The President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, made a statement following the incident where he extended his sympathies to the victims and praised the rescue team, acknowledging their bravery.
