Diversity in lesbian cinema? Absolutely! The Christmas Lottery brings a refreshing spotlight on Black lesbian visibility and the vibrant spectrum of queer women of color that’s often missing in mainstream narratives. The movie is about three sisters whose dad won the lottery and calls them home for Christmas to try to bring their family back together after being split up by time and space. While the main story is looking for a lost lottery ticket, a side story shows how one daughter’s marriage to a woman is beautifully portrayed. Their relationship is shown to be wonderfully normal, with none of the usual coming-out problems. It’s a sweet portrayal of a loving relationship that avoids clichés by showing two women enjoying their relationship from the start. It’s a portrayal that really hits home and makes diverse love stories seem normal.
Looking for Her
With its clever humour and touching moments, Looking for Her captures the spirit of the season and shows that sometimes the strangest adventures lead to the sweetest connections. Family and friends are finally ready to meet Taylor’s girlfriend “Jess” now that she is going home for the holidays. It’s just that Jess isn’t really her girlfriend. Taylor holds open auditions for someone to play the part for the holidays. I couldn’t stop laughing, , twisting my braids and smiling while watching this one.

Christmas at the Ranch pulls you into a sweet country story that warms your heart like a fireplace on a cold winter night. Think about this: Haleye goes back to her home ranch because she is driven to save her family’s failing business. But wait, the story gets more complicated! When she meets Kate, the ranch hand with a spirit as free as the wind, sparks fly faster than a horse can run.

Merry & Gay is a sweet story about a stage actress who goes home for Christmas and doesn’t know that her love story is about to start up again while people are trying to pair her up with a new boyfriend. I must admit that this was very cheesy, but it was cute. Much better than the films we usually see. I’m glad we finally have some decent sapphic Christmas films to watch. Have fun with it!
